When the U.S. Mint introduced the Franklin Silver Half Dollar over 70 years ago in 1948, it marked a milestone in U.S. coinage history. With its magnificent image of Benjamin Franklin — one of America’s greatest patriots and a legendary Founding Father — it became the first circulating U.S. coin to portray a person from history other than a president. The U.S. Mint struck its last-ever Franklin Half Dollar almost 60 years ago in 1963 when the series ended abruptly to make way for the Kennedy Half Dollar as a tribute to our fallen president. Ever since, collectors have been scrambling to find even a single Franklin Silver Half Dollar, a coin which is becoming harder to find with every passing year.
