By tradition, the Philadelphia Mint was not required to include its mint mark on coins — a practice that endured for 150 years until World War II when the mint struck emergency Jefferson Nickels in 35% silver and included the “P” mint mark to identify these special coins. Other denominations followed suit between 1979 and 2017.
That’s why this collection is so important — because it includes every first-year “P” mint mark coin, up to the first dollar coins. It even includes the one-year-only 2017 Lincoln Penny that is the only penny bearing the “P” mint mark; it was a special commemorative issue celebrating the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Mint, and it is particularly hard to find today.
Other key coins include the 1942 silver nickel, which was the first-ever “P” mint mark coin…the 1979 Susan B.
